Yesterday we rode outside for the first time since last fall. Usually we manage to get out earlier than this, but conditions were muddy the entire winter (excepting short stretches when it was bitterly cold), which means footing was really bad in all the places we usually ride. Friday afternoon, however, I found myself sitting… Read more »

A Slow Spring
It’s been a really busy 10 days or so. For the first week after draining Aiden’s abscess, we unwrapped, soaked, flushed, and rewrapped it every day. That was a lot, because it meant going to the barn every night, even if Brian and I both worked long days. Plus, this (naturally) coincided with Brian being… Read more »
Time with the Kid
Since Brian has mostly taken over riding Zoey lately, I’ve been spending lots of time with Laredo. And it’s been neat in a number of ways. Since we got him a year and a half ago, Brian and I have switched back and forth working with Laredo consistently, usually alternating rides. While this is great… Read more »
Getting to 200
At the end of 2012, when Brian and I talked about our riding goal for the next year, we picked something that would be difficult. We agreed 200 hours would be a stretch. Of course, we’re aware some people ride 200+ hours in a week, but considering we both have full time jobs that don’t… Read more »
End of a Long Week
We’ve barely had Zoey a week. It is kind of hard to imagine, as it seems like we’ve gotten to know her pretty well through the vet work and groundwork and riding. It does help that she is a fairly easy horse to work with. She has her anxieties and issues, but she is not… Read more »
Friday at the Barn
We were super happy to wave goodbye to the work week and head for the barn today. We found the herd warm and bored, and everyone but Zoey seemed really happy to see us. I wove my way through the welcoming committee at the gate and went into the second pasture. Zoey seems to have… Read more »
Steen Does Double Duty
I took the good camera to the barn today. The phones are great and all, but sometimes it’s good to get some nicer shots. (see more photos on Brian’s post about today) Upon arrival we first checked Bear’s temp. He was 99.6°, which made us happy. Our plan for the day was for Brian to… Read more »
The New Norm?
I checked Bear’s temp first thing and it was below 100. Very nice, considering he was just dozing in the sun on another warm afternoon. And then I proceeded to catch Zoey. She is not a fan of me, or possibly not a big fan of men. It can be hard to tell as Robin… Read more »
A Name and a Ride
I think we have decided on a name for the new girl. At the moment we’re leaning towards calling her Zoey. We tried it out today and it seemed pretty natural. So for the moment, Zoey it is. We got the barn and attended to our sick ponies first. We gave Bear his meds and… Read more »
Doing Better
Brian drove out to the barn first thing this morning. He took Bear’s temperature and was happy to discover it was back down to normal. He also checked on new girl’s butt, and although he didn’t get super close to her, he could tell it had stayed closed in the night. Two very good things.… Read more »
